Monster Hunter Wilds: Best Lance Builds – TU 4

If you want to feel almost immortal while still serving as a frontline DPS, the Lance is the weapon for you in Monster Hunter Wilds. With the right skill set and build, the Lance becomes one of the best weapons both defensively and offensively. In this guide, you’ll find the best Lance builds in Monster Hunter Wilds.

*This guide was updated for Title Update 4

Lance Gameplay and Combo

The Lance is Monster Hunter Wilds’ definitive defensive weapon, but don’t let that mislead you, it is fully capable of dealing impressive damage while holding its ground.

Lance gameplay revolves around three key principles: wound creation, consistent poking, and shield-based counterattacks. Positioning and timing are everything with this weapon.

Best Combo

The Mid Thrust is faster than the High Thrust, and in Wilds, attack speed directly translates to higher total damage output. The optimal combo is Mid Thrust → Mid Thrust → Mid Thrust → Triple Thrust or Charge Counter.

You can transition into Charge Counter at any point mid-combo, and follow up with Power Guard if quick repositioning is needed.

Perfect Counter

Mastering the Perfect Counter is essential for any Lance user. Time your R2 press precisely as a monster’s attack connects to activate it. From there, you have three follow-up options: a basic poke, Payback Thrust (Circle), or Dash Attack (Triangle + Circle), the latter being the highest damage option of the three.

Dash Attack

The Dash Attack serves multiple purposes beyond damage. Use it to reposition, chase a fleeing monster, or punish a downed monster for significant damage. Or if you just want to win a race.

Power Clash

The Power Clash is one of the most rewarding mechanics available to Lance users. By perfectly timing your shield to absorb a monster’s attack, you initiate a powerful clash sequence that can turn the tide of a hunt. Mastering this move is highly recommended.

Low Rank Lance Build & Progression

Low Rank doesn’t offer armor sets with skills particularly tailored to Lance, so the default Hope Armor is the recommended starting point. Its Divine Blessing provides a reliable defensive buffer, which is especially valuable for newer players still getting familiar with the weapon.

Once you begin facing Guardian Rathalos and Guardian Arkveld, you can start incorporating more damage-oriented skills into your build without compromising your defensive foundation.

The Barina Sarissa is the best early Lance option available, and should be crafted as soon as possible. Its Paralysis status effect creates frequent openings by immobilizing monsters, allowing for extra damage opportunities.

As you approach High Rank, transition to either the Albirath Tail I or G. Veldian Lancea I, both of which offer strong damage and solid utility for the challenges ahead.

Best Lances for Low Rank

  • Albirath Tail I
  • Rompo Piercer I
  • G. Veldian Lancea I
  • Barina Sarissa II

Early High Rank Lance Build & Progression

Upon reaching HR 35, shift your focus toward upgrading your damage output in preparation for the tougher challenges ahead.

Weapon choice at this stage is flexible and largely dependent on your preferred playstyle. Each option carries its own strengths, whether through elemental damage or status effects, so select based on the monsters you are currently hunting and what suits your approach best.

Upgrade to a mixed set of 3-piece G. Rathalos and 2-piece G. Ebony, which activates both Weakness Exploit and Burst, a strong combination that significantly boosts damage output. This setup will carry you comfortably through High Rank content until you are ready to transition into endgame builds.

Best Lances for Early High Rank

  • Albirath Tail II
  • Rompo Piercer II
  • G. Veldian Lancea II
  • Rey Indra II
  • Eiferschild I

Best High Rank to Endgame DB Builds

These builds are the best options to carry you from the end of the story quests and help increase your HR until you reach true endgame monsters, such as arch-tempered monsters and Gogmazios.

Second Wind Gore Mighty Build

Second Wind is the cornerstone of this build, providing a secondary stamina bar that keeps Maximum Might consistently active, even after performing a Perfect Guard or several dashes in quick succession.

The build achieves Weakness Exploit (Level 5), Maximum Might (Level 3), Antivirus (Level 3), and Agitator (Level 2), resulting in a remarkable 95% Affinity even without an affinity-boosting Artian weapon. Critical Boost Level 5 is strongly recommended alongside this to fully capitalize on the high critical hit rate.

It is worth noting that Power Guard and extended Dash Attacks will temporarily drop Maximum Might due to stamina consumption. This build is therefore best suited for players who favor a more controlled, guard-focused approach centered around Perfect Guard and consistent poking rather than aggressive mobility.

The Skyscraper is the recommended weapon for this build, ideally set up with full Attack infusion and a 4 Attack + 1 Sharpness reinforcement, with Paralysis as the status effect.

Azure Bolt Lance Build

This is one of the highest damage builds available for Lance before transitioning into full endgame sets, and is specifically tailored for players who prefer an aggressive, offense-first playstyle.

The build maximizes Agitator, Weakness Exploit, Offensive Guard, and Maximum Might, a potent combination that pushes both attack and affinity to their limits, rewarding players who stay consistently on the offensive and capitalize on every counter opportunity.

The Artian weapon setup remains the same as the previous build, Skyscraper with full Attack infusion and a 4 Attack + 1 Sharpness reinforcement with Paralysis status.

Best Endgame Lance Builds in MH Wilds

The builds below are the best options for Lance for endgame content in the latest update. Choose the one that best fits your playstyle.

Endgame Second Wind Agitator Lance Build

This build centers around Second Wind and Black Eclipse as its primary damage-driving mechanics, making it one of the highest DPS Lance setups currently available, and notably easy to craft compared to other endgame options.

The build achieves maximum levels of Offensive Guard, Weakness Exploit, Agitator, Counterstrike, Maximum Might, and Antivirus, a comprehensive skill spread that maximizes both affinity and raw damage output simultaneously.

For the Gogmartian weapon, Gore Magala’s skill must be active to trigger Black Eclipse. Second Wind is sourced from the Gogmazios Vambraces, so make sure that armor piece is included in your set to keep both key mechanics consistently active throughout hunts.

Endgame Scorcher Lance Build

This build revolves around Scorcher, one of the strongest meta skills currently available. Scorcher deals additional fire damage with each hit landed, and its cumulative fire buildup over the course of a hunt produces remarkably high total damage. To activate it, the Rathalos Flare skill must be active on your Gogmartian Lance.

Alongside Scorcher, this build incorporates two additional powerful mechanics. Binding Counter, sourced from the Jin Dahaad armor set, synergizes exceptionally well with Lance’s Power Clash playstyle. Black Eclipse from the Gore Magala set rounds out the build, providing its signature affinity and damage boost that remains a staple across many endgame builds.

Endgame Ultimate Tank Lance Build

This build is purpose-built for players who want to serve as the frontline defender for their team, an almost unkillable vanguard capable of withstanding virtually any monster attack.

Change the Promised Abyss with Aether Pike (this image is a universal tank build, as this works with any weapon with shield).

Maximum levels of Offensive Guard, Guard, Guard Up, Defense Boost, and Divine Blessing form an impenetrable defensive foundation, making it extremely difficult for monsters to take you down under normal circumstances.

Despite its heavy defensive focus, this build still contributes meaningful damage through Agitator, Burst, Peak Performance, and Maximum Might.

This build is particularly effective against monsters that can be taunted, such as Omega Planetes.

Endgame Comfy Immortal Lance Build

This build is designed for players who prioritize survival above all else, and when paired with Lance’s naturally strong defensive toolkit, it creates an exceptionally durable and forgiving setup, an Immortal.

Change the Ostrak Oblivion with Aether Pike (this image is a universal immortal build, as this works with any weapon).

The foundation of this build is maximum level Defense Boost, Divine Blessing, and Recovery Up. Both the Zoh Shia and Arkveld armor pieces contribute passive HP recovery the more you attack, meaning the build offers not only outstanding survivability but also a decent offensive presence during hunts.

It is worth noting that overall damage output is significantly lower compared to the previous builds. This setup is best approached as a comfort and survivability-first option rather than a damage-optimized one.

Currently, these are the best Lance builds in Monster Hunter Wilds as of the latest update (TU 4). This page will be updated as new meta builds emerge in future updates.
