Monster Hunter Wilds: Best Heavy Bowgun Builds – TU 4

Want to drill monsters with Gatling gun-like weaponry? Use Heavy Bowgun. Want to be a tank? Use Heavy Bowgun. The HBG is a strong weapon both offensively and defensively, and it excels at both long and short range. In this guide, you will find the best Heavy Bowgun builds in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Heavy Bowgun Gameplay and Combo

Heavy Bowgun in Wilds stays true to its roots, overwhelming monsters with a relentless barrage of heavy ammo. New mechanics like Offset Attacks and Power Clash add meaningful defensive and mobility options that make it more versatile than ever.

Two Modes

HBG operates in two modes, switchable by pressing Circle. Normal Mode is your standard firing mode, while Ignition Mode unlocks two powerful moves, Wyvernheart, the iconic machine gun-style rapid fire, and Wyverncounter, which serves as HBG’s Offset Attack.

Best Combo Loop

Start in Ignition Mode and fire Wyvernheart until the gauge is fully depleted. Switch to Normal Mode and use either Pierce or Spread ammo while the gauge recharges. Pierce delivers the highest DPS and is effective at both close and long range, while Spread is best reserved for close-range engagements.

Once the gauge is full, switch back to Wyvernheart and repeat the loop.

Note that Spread has received a significant nerf in Wilds, causing heavy recoil. It remains situationally useful but is no longer the dominant choice it once was.

Seikret

Riding your Seikret turns HBG into a mobile turret. Spread ammo is particularly effective while mounted, as it eliminates recoil entirely. However, Wyvernheart cannot be used while riding, so dismount whenever you need to take full advantage of its firepower.

Perfect Guard

Timing your block precisely as a monster attacks triggers a Perfect Guard, opening up three useful follow-up options: a sidestep (Square), a quick reload (Triangle), or a quick counter shot (R2).

Low Rank Heavy Bowgun Build & Progression

Start with the default Hope Armor for its Divine Blessing Level 3, which provides reliable early protection. Keep this set until you have defeated Guardian Ebony Odogaron and Guardian Rathalos, then craft their armor sets for improved defense along with Burst and Weakness Exploit.

Burst Level 3 delivers a significant damage boost to both raw and elemental attacks early on, while Weakness Exploit increases Affinity for more consistent critical hits, a strong combination that meaningfully improves your damage output heading into High Rank.

The Iron Assault is the easiest and most accessible weapon choice in Low Rank, and can be upgraded to Level 2 early on. If you prefer an alternative, the Power Stinger I is a solid option thanks to its Level 3 Pierce ammo and Special Ammo boost for Wyvernheart.

Best HBGs for Low Rank

  • Iron Assault II
  • Power Stinger I

Early High Rank Heavy Bowgun Build & Progression

After defeating Guardian Ebony Odogaron, Guardian Rathalos, and Blangonga, craft their armor sets immediately for a significant upgrade to both defense and offensive skills.

This setup provides Burst (Level 4), Agitator (Level 4), Maximum Might (Level 3), Divine Blessing (Level 3), and Earplugs (Level 2), a well-rounded combination that meaningfully boosts both damage output and survivability against late-game bosses.

This is also a good time to start crafting the Chain, Exploiter, and Challenger charms, as all three become essential components of stronger endgame builds.

Continue upgrading the Iron Assault to Level 3 and the Power Stinger to Level 2. Equip both in your primary and secondary weapon slots so you can easily switch between them to refresh Wyvernheart mode whenever needed during hunts.

Best HBGs for Early High Rank

  • Iron Assault III
  • Power Stinger II

Best High Rank to Endgame Heavy Bowgun Builds

These builds are the best options to carry you from the end of the story quests and help increase your HR until you reach true endgame monsters, such as arch-tempered dragons and Gogmazios.

Second Wind Agitator HBG Build

This build revolves around Black Eclipse and Second Wind to maximize Affinity for consistent critical hits throughout every hunt.

This build is configured for a close-range, shotgun-style playstyle using Spread, Standard, Wyvernheart, and Wyvernblast mods. Getting up close and personal with monsters is the key to getting the most out of this setup.

The ideal charm combines both Ballistics and Critical Boost. If you haven’t obtained that combination yet, the Challenger Charm is a reliable substitute, simply swap the Challenger jewel out for either a Burst or Counterstrike jewel to maintain strong damage output.

Best Endgame Heavy Bowgun Builds in MH Wilds

The builds below are the best options for Heavy Bowgun for endgame content in the latest update. Choose the one that best fits your playstyle.

Endgame Peak Scorcher HBG Build

Scorcher is firmly part of the current meta, and this build utilizes it to deliver devastating damage against any monster. To activate Scorcher, make sure Rathalos’ Flare is active on your Gogmartian weapon.

Maximum levels of Peak Performance, Weakness Exploit, Agitator, and Maximum Might form a powerful damage foundation, pushing both raw damage and critical hit output to impressive levels.

Binding Counter and Hasten Recovery are incorporated alongside the offensive skills, providing meaningful sustain and keeping you alive comfortably throughout longer hunts.

This is a long-range build, so equip Normal ammo mods alongside the Wyvernpiercer Ignition special ammo. The Ballistics skill is mandatory for this build, as it extends the range at which your ammo deals full damage, essential for a long-range playstyle.

Endgame Spread Second Wind HBG Build

This build shares the same core skills as the previous Scorcher build but is tailored if you prefer a close-range, shotgun-style playstyle using Spread ammo.

Equip Spread and Wyvernheart ignition mods to maximize the effectiveness of close-range engagements.

The ideal charm roll for this build is a combination of Weakness Exploit and Spread Shots for the best possible damage output at close range.

Both this build and the previous long-range Scorcher build deliver very heavy damage, the only real difference is playstyle and ammo preference. Pick whichever suits you best and enjoy the devastation.
