Monster Hunter Wilds: Best Switch Axe Builds – TU 4

The Switch Axe is one of the most powerful and exciting weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds. It’s a technical weapon that takes time to learn, but once you get the hang of it and have the right build, it absolutely tears through monsters. In this guide, you will find the best Switch Axe builds in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Switch Axe Gameplay and Combo

The Switch Axe’s main goal is simple: fill your gauge fast and unleash maximum damage. Everything you do revolves around this.

Filling the Power Axe Gauge

Circle → Circle → Triangle, then Triangle → Triangle

To activate Power Axe mode, perform Wild Swings (Circle) twice, then Heavy Slam (Triangle), followed by two Triangle presses for Side Slash and Spiral Burst Slash. This is your go-to method for filling the Power Axe gauge quickly.

Filling the Amp Gauge

Circle → Circle → Circle (while in Sword Mode)

While in Sword Mode, press Circle three times to perform Heavenward Flurry. Two full Heavenward Flurry combos will completely fill your Amp Gauge. You can loop this combo continuously by pressing Triangle at the end, then going straight back into Heavenward Flurry.

Alternatively, a perfect counter is a great way to rapidly fill the Amp Gauge. Time R2 + Triangle in Sword Mode, just as a monster attacks. A successful counter followed immediately by Heavenward Flurry fills the gauge significantly faster.

Full Release Slash

Hold R2 + Circle + Triangle (while in Sword Mode)

Once your Amp Gauge is full, hold R2+ Circle + Triangle while in Sword Mode to unleash the Full Release Slash — the Switch Axe’s most powerful move and the centerpiece of its damage output.

Infinite FRS Loop

As long as your Amp Gauge stays filled, you can loop the Full Release Slash indefinitely. At the end of FRS, press Triangle, then quickly press R2 to switch back to Sword Mode, and repeat the FRS again. Keeping this loop going is the key to maximizing your damage.

Low Rank Switch Axe Build & Progression

The Barina Hache II is the best weapon choice in Low Rank, offering the strongest sharpness available at this stage, an important factor since the Full Release Slash combo drains sharpness quickly.

If you want an alternative, Xu Wu’s Nihil Switch Axe is a solid option as it comes with the Power Prolonger skill built in.

Armor options are limited at this stage, so keep it simple. Craft three pieces of Ajarakan Armor for the Partbreaker skill and improved defense. Pair this with a Divine Blessing Charm for additional protection during hunts.

Early High Rank Switch Axe Build & Progression

Entering High Rank, focus on building toward two key skills: Weakness Exploit and Power Prolonger. This combination boosts both your damage output and hunting efficiency, giving you a solid foundation for grinding High Rank monsters and upgrading your gear.

Power Prolonger extends the duration of your charged Amp Gauge, giving you more time to chain Full Release Slash combos before the gauge runs out.

The Rath Flamesplitter I is a strong upgrade at this stage, offering built-in Critical Boost that pairs well with Weakness Exploit. However, it requires Power Prolonger decorations to reach its full potential. If you don’t have those jewels yet, the Nihil Switch Axe II is the better immediate choice, as it comes with maximum level Power Prolonger by default.

Best High Rank to Endgame Switch Axe Builds

These builds are the best options to carry you from the end of the story quests and help increase your HR until you reach true endgame monsters, such as arch-tempered dragons and Gogmazios.

Latent Power Swaxe Build

This is one of the strongest late High Rank builds available, capable of carrying you through the toughest monsters before the endgame.

The build centers around Latent Power, boosted by the 2-piece Rey Dau set bonus that extends its active duration. The 2-piece Lagiacrus set bonus stacks on top, further increasing Affinity for even more consistent critical hits.

The following skills should all be maxed out: Critical Boost, Power Prolonger, Weakness Exploit, and Maximum Might. These form the non-negotiable foundation of the build.

A charm with Attack Boost Level 3 is a great bonus if you get lucky with the RNG. Counterstrike Level 3 is another strong addition that further boosts attack damage when available.

For the Artian Switch Axe, use full Attack infusion with a 4 Attack + 1 Sharpness reinforcement for the best balance of damage and sharpness sustainability.

Comfy Immortal Swaxe Build

If you find yourself carting frequently while using Swaxe, this build is the perfect safety net while you get more familiar with monster attack patterns. Once you’re comfortable, you can always switch back to a more damage-focused setup.

The 4-piece Zoh Shia set bonus is the heart of this build, providing continuous passive health regeneration throughout the hunt. Combined with maximum levels of Divine Blessing, Recovery Up, and Recovery Speed, this build makes hunts significantly more forgiving and keeps you on your feet far more consistently.

Best Endgame Switch Axe Builds in MH Wilds

The builds below are the best options for Switch Axe for endgame content in the latest update. Choose the one that best fits your playstyle.

Endgame Latent Gore Swaxe Build

This is one of the most accessible endgame builds available, requiring no RNG outside of obtaining the perfect Gogmartian weapon itself.

The build pushes both raw damage and affinity as high as possible through Black Eclipse, Latent Power, Agitator, and Maximum Might. When all skills are fully activated, the build reaches 85% Affinity, more than enough to consistently trigger critical hits.

Endgame Gamma Ark Dragon Swaxe Build

This is personally considered the best Dragon element build for Switch Axe, striking an excellent balance between offensive power and defensive sustainability.

The Arkvulcan set bonus provides passive healing as you land hits, keeping you healthy throughout the hunt without sacrificing damage. The armor and decoration skills are carefully selected to push damage output to its highest possible level within this setup.

The Gogmartian Switch Axe must have Gore Magala’s Tyranny and Lord’s Soul active, and a Dragon element version is mandatory for this build. As a result, the Convert Element skill is also essential, as it significantly amplifies Dragon attack damage after taking an elemental hit from a monster.
